History of Christ Lutheran Church

Founded in 1890, Christ Lutheran has a rich history that reflects our community’s faith, growth, and dedication. Our church has been a cornerstone of spiritual and communal life in Harrisburg for over a century.

Founding and Early Years

Christ Lutheran Church has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when a small group called the Young Peoples Mission Band began gathering at 15th and Shoop Streets. This group would later establish Memorial Lutheran Church. However, differing visions for the church’s future led 62 members to select a new location at 13th and Thompson Streets, the current site of Christ Lutheran Church. Originally, these founders considered names like Salem Lutheran and Holy Trinity before finally choosing “Christ Church” to reflect their mission.

The official organization of Christ Lutheran Church took place on March 15, 1890, in the Webster School, known today as the Spanish-American Center, at 13th and Kittatinny Streets. Under the guidance of Rev. D.M. Gilbert from Zion Lutheran Church, 66 charter members established the new congregation.

A few months later, in July, the church welcomed its first pastor, Rev. T.L. Crouse, a young seminarian who dedicated himself to leading the fledgling community. By August 17, 1890, the congregation laid the cornerstone of a brownstone church, which would cost $10,000 to complete. This initial structure was dedicated on March 15, 1891, marking the beginning of a legacy of faith, service, and community outreach that has endured for over a century.
